For over 15 years, because of the large amount of films and fiche they housed on permanent loan, the Yakima LDS Family History Library (FHL) was listed among the top 20 family history libraries in the United States. About 2014 the Yakima Family History Library was notified that the facility they occupied was needed for other LDS church uses and therefore it would be necessary for them to find a new repository for their collection. Because the Yakima Valley Genealogical Society had the status as an affiliate library of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, we were offered the opportunity to host this collection. Along with a massive collection of films and fiche, we were also given the storage cabinets and microfilm and microfiche machines that accompanied these records. About half of the collection we took over were United States census records that were easily located and viewed on the internet. Because of that, those films were removed from the collection and returned to Salt Lake City, leaving the Yakima Valley Genealogical Society  responsible for the remaining 6,000 rolls of microfilm and 6,000 microfiche. This collection is comprised of films and fiche of original records, county histories and compiled or extracted records covering 31 different countries and all 50 states, with some states being extensively covered. This collection also includes an impressive amount of family histories. Because the Salt Lake City Family History Library no longer allows the lending of their films and fiche, many of the films and fiche we now hold are not readily accessible outside of Salt Lake City.
